STUDY:
Ordained and un-ordained cantor:
STUDY: Learn to aggregate the order of services and properly render the changeable parts of Divine Services from
the Oktoekhos, Menia, Triodion, and Pentecostarion for daily, weekend, Lenten and Feast-day Services according to
proper Slavic melodies and some Greek melodies including isons (Drone notes) with “tone announcements” that give
pitches to singers.
PRACTICUM: Participate in the singing and serving of the all services sung in Monastery-Institue Chapel and
concerts with the Institute’s Touring Groups which sings various concerts during the December-January and the
Lenten-Paskal (Ressurrection) Seasons.
Choir Director:
Master choral direction including direction of unmetered Slavic and Greek Chant forms. Master the indication of
choral realization gestures for diction, sonorities, dynamics, phrasing and other realization values. Learn to control
the pace of singing rather than allowing the choir to dictate same. Learn to use short spoken directions for sequential
hymnody. Master pitch adjustments in services so as not to disrupt the flow of Liturgical Prayer. Examine the
psychology of working with untrained church singers and overcoming their “personal sound” to blend with the
ensemble, the various manifestations of the excuse “that’s not me” in choral sound production, overcoming singer’s
timidity in producing volume. Learn to manage a vibrant “hushed but comprehensible “ choral sound.
PRACTICUM: Conduct, in rotation, the singers in the daily, week-end, Lenten and Festal Services in Monastery-
Institute Chapel. Competent students may be asked to join the conducting staff of touring groups for their concerts or
loaned out to parishes for week-end services or for a temporary student-in-residence-conducting practicum. Conduct
sectional rehearsals and diction tutorials for newer students.
Gentlemen pursuing ordinations Sub- or Hypo-deacons:
Examine liturgical actions and movement pattern in the Temple for servitors; the proper attitude of respect towards
Vivtar (Sanctuary), the Altar Table and the High Place . Master the sign of the cross as properly made by liturgical
servitors; the correct forms of great and lessor reverences, how to seek blessing for liturgical actions during services,
and when and how to obtain group blessing for liturgical movement at Entrances with Censor & Litiya (at Vespers),
the Gospel Book and Chalice &Discos (at Liturgies), Learn Under the supervision of ordained clergy. the correct use
and movement with and for the Crucessional Cross, Rapida, portable Lamapada, Banners, portable analogion, kadilo
(censor), Zeon, Hand washing ewer, basin & rushink, zhezel, dikiron & trikiron, orlets, and manner of assisting higher
clergy with vesting, assisting with large & small omofors and miter. Master the singing of harmonized clergy parts
sung during con-celebrated Vigil and Liturgy and other harmonized clergy parts for the service at which the Bishop is
present, which are sung in Slavonic, Ukrainian, Belarusian or Greek Language. Learn to appreciate how to discreetly
enable Clergy in heavy Vestment or who are movement impaired.
PRACTICUM: Participate in the singing and serving of the all services sung in Monastery-Institue Chapel and
concerts with the Institute’s Touring Groups which sings various concerts during the December-January and the
Lenten-Paskal (Ressurrection) Seasons.
WORK: Assist with the preparing of meals, the maintenance of the facilities and help in the music library or
Orthodox Village offices 15 hours a week.
BENEFITS: Air-conditioned private (one person) dorm room with shared bath, meals on fast days, after Saturday
Vigil, Sunday Liturgy & Great Feast Day Services; “uniforms” i.e. appropriate matching clothing for services and off
campus performances, small cash stipend, cell phone reimbursement to motivated or exceptional students including
those with bi-lingual competence. Limited relocation allowance and/or a larger stipend for applicants/students with
demonstrable vocal music performance abilities and/or vocal sight reading abilities. Certificates to sponsoring or
endorsing jurisdiction if applicable. Placement assistance available upon completion, but not guaranteed.
